Chimpanzee
The habituated M group in Mahale — 50+ individuals tracked daily since the 1960s
Western Tanzania
Western Tanzania
Connect Mahale, Katavi and Lake Tanganyika through carefully planned air and boat logistics, with primate and wilderness experiences at the centre.
Western Tanzania
Western Tanzania is the country's most isolated and rewarding safari region. Accessible only by boat or charter flight, Mahale Mountains National Park and Gombe Stream National Park offer the world's best chimpanzee tracking experiences. Here, forested mountains plunge into the second-deepest lake on earth, and the only way to reach your camp is by dhow across crystal waters. This is not a traditional safari — it is an immersion into one of the planet's last truly wild places.
Geographic context
Explore the Mahale Mountains rising from Lake Tanganyika, Gombe Stream's research forest, and the vast waters of Africa's deepest lake.

Seasonal guidance
Conditions vary year to year. Final advice is matched to your dates rather than treated as a guarantee.
Jun–Oct
Best chimpanzee tracking conditions with drier forest trails. Lake waters are calm, and visibility is excellent. This is the primary visiting season.
Nov–Feb
A secondary dry period. Chimpanzees may move to higher elevations, making tracking more challenging but rewarding.
Mar–May
Heavy rainfall makes forest trails challenging. Some camps close. The rainforest is at its most lush and atmospheric.
Access & planning
Access
Approximately 3–4 hours to Mahale Airstrip — the only practical access method
Approximately 5 hours to Mahale — for travellers not on the Northern Circuit
From Mahale Airstrip, a 2–3 hour dhow or speedboat transfer along Lake Tanganyika to camp
Movement
All chimpanzee tracking and forest exploration is on foot with expert guides and trackers
Lake Tanganyika travel between camp, airstrip, and activity points
Self-guided lake exploration near camp
Western Tanzania is the most logistically demanding safari region in Tanzania. Access is by charter flight only, and camp capacity is extremely limited. This exclusivity is precisely what makes it extraordinary. All arrangements — flights, transfers, permits, and camp — are handled as part of your complete Amazing Tanzania itinerary.

Planning questions
Mahale is accessible only by charter flight to Mahale Airstrip, followed by a 2–3 hour dhow or speedboat transfer along Lake Tanganyika. There are no roads. This remoteness is what preserves the experience.
Mahale is larger, more scenically diverse, and has a larger habituated chimpanzee group (the M group, 50+ individuals). Gombe is smaller and was Jane Goodall's historic research site. Mahale offers a more immersive wilderness experience with better accommodation options.
For travellers who have already experienced classic safari, Western Tanzania is the ultimate reward. There is no other place on earth where you can track chimpanzees in montane rainforest, swim in a crystal-clear lake at the base of forested mountains, and sleep in a camp accessible only by dhow. It is, quite simply, one of the most extraordinary travel experiences available.
Yes — this is our most recommended combination. A charter flight connects Arusha to Mahale in approximately 3 hours, making it possible to experience both the Great Migration and chimpanzee tracking in a single 12–14 day journey. We arrange all flights, transfers, and logistics seamlessly.
